At age 79 I really did not think it would of interest with talk of aliens, outer space, etc., but, once I got started reading I had a hard time putting the book down. The colourful descriptions of the aliens and their colonies, etc, I felt I could really see it all clearly. The mystery of what all was facing these two Real Humans kept me so involved, I hated to see the final pages, but I definitely am looking forward to reading his next novel. Well Done, Brian!”

What a wonderful adventure!!! This is a well-constructed and compelling story with the traditional literary device of the “quest motif” expertly set far in the future, in worlds millions of miles away. The story is extremely well paced, with each chapter full of challenges, obstacles and intrigue. Yet the action never overshadows the colourful, rich descriptions of the characters, places and natural environments and the thoughtful ethical commentary interspersed throughout the book. Brian Bowers’ novel had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish! The description in the novel brought the story to life and the characters were really relatable! The story is a beautiful blend of adventure, sci-fi and romance and includes powerful messages about accepting differences and being kind and respectful towards others. I can’t wait to read the next novel and to experience new adventures alongside Paula and Jake! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to escape within a captivating and riveting adventure story!

If you like adventure, sci-fi and a little bit of romance thrown in, then this book is for you. Jake and Paula find themselves transported to another galaxy where aliens and humans are at war and they have to decide which side they're going to fight for.
Jake is a man used to working alone and never being questioned, and Paula, who's brilliant, has a hard time finding her courage. The character arc is satisfying and the romantic subplot gives you just enough romance without overwhelming the adventure.
This book made me laugh, mostly at Jake, and it also had me biting my nails during some of the action.

What a fun read! A great little escape into the adventures of an unlikely couple in a crazy situation. I really enjoyed the interplay between the loose cannon Jake and the more uptight Paula - as is so often the case, opposites attract, and have the potential to learn from each other if egos can be set aside :D glad to see it is a trilogy… can’t wait to see what they get into next.

I picked up this book after having it recommended to me, and let me tell you, I was not disappointed.
It's a quick read, but that might be because it hooks you in right from the start, and never lets off the gas until the end, making it really hard to put down.
A classic pairing of sci-fi and exciting on-the-edge-of-your seat adventure, with the clear essence of humanity and yes, even some romance. It's a great read from start to finish, and I am anxiously awaiting the second book to see where Jake & Paula's heroic tales will take them next.
